Riverbank walkway closure extended

An extended section of Hamilton’s riverbank walkway will be closed next week so a slip can be repaired.

The 350-metre stretch on the western side of the Waikato River between Alma Street and the old Embassy Theatre site – where the Riff Raff statue stands – will be closed from 26 March to allow for repair of a slip and damage to drainage.

Acting Parks and Gardens Manager Sally Sheedy says although the slip is relatively small, access to the site is difficult.

“Our contractors need to use machinery for some of this repair work, and in the interests of public safety, we’ll need to close the walkway,” Miss Sheedy says.

“We realise this will inconvenience river walkway users, but we need to get this work done.”

It is hoped the Alma Street to the former Embassy Theatre site stretch will reopen on 2 April.

Miss Sheedy says test drilling further north on the same walkway, where another slip occurred near Bryce Street, has been completed. Council is waiting for results of the assessment from the contractor and will then be in a position to decide what happens next. That section of the walkway will remain closed.
