Severe Weather Causes Power Cuts Across
Taranaki
High winds have caused trees and branches to tear down overhead lines, leading to power cuts across Taranaki early this morning.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the storm had started to cause damage to Powerco’s electricity network around 1am and power had been cut to around 2000 customers, mainly in Taranaki.
“Significant damage has been caused to the network and we expect further power cuts as high winds continue throughout the day. We’re working on restoring power as quickly and safely as possible.”
He said the majority of supply was expected to be restored today, although there could be a small number of customers without power overnight.
Mr Marsh said all lines that are down must be treated as live at all times.
“People should keep clear of damaged lines and poles, then contact Powerco on the emergency line 0800 272727.”
Powerco is New Zealand’s second largest electricity and gas distribution utility with around 420,000 consumers connected to its networks. Powerco’s electricity networks are in Western Bay of Plenty, Thames, Coromandel, Eastern and Southern Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, Rangitikei, Manawatu and the Wairarapa. Its gas pipeline networks are in Taranaki, Hutt Valley, Porirua, Wellington, Horowhenua, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay.
