Parks No-Go Zones for Public During High Winds

Parks No-Go Zones for Public During High Winds
Tue 20 Mar 2012

The public is advised to stay out of parks and walkways in New Plymouth District while high winds lash the area.

Manager Parks Mark Bruhn says trees are down throughout the district, both in parks and on roads, and arboriculture crews are removing them on a priority basis.

“We don’t want people going into our parks until we can assess the damage and any public safety issues – and more trees could come down with the winds continuing today,” he says.

“That assessment can’t happen until the winds die down at all sites.”

The Fernery and Display Houses in Pukekura Park is closed until further notice after the winds broke several panes of glass overnight.

About 10 panes in the roof over house one and 20 panes in the lower propagation area were blown out.

In addition, Brooklands Park Drive and the Kaimata Street entrance to Brooklands Park remain closed due to the pack-down of WOMAD (which has been delayed due to the weather).
