Mouse Sighted On Matiu/Somes Island
The Department of Conservation (DOC) will implement a number of additional pest control measures following the sighting of, what is believed to be, a mouse on Matiu/Somes Island.
What are believed to be mouse droppings were also found and sent for analysis, and a Mouse Eradication Team will be set up. Meanwhile, all tracking tunnels have been set with peanut butter lure around the island, and additional traps and bait stations have been set around the island.
Matiu/Somes Island is home to a number of rare and endangered species including kakariki, little penguin/korora, giant weta and tuatara.
All visitors are required to thoroughly check their belongings in the Whare Kiore when they arrive on the island and at this stage DOC does not know how a mouse could have arrived.
DOC says this is yet another example of why people need to be mindful when visiting islands like Matiu/Somes, and must ensure that pests are not able to arrive in their belongings or boats.
