Burnham consumer tanks sterilised
Media advisory notice:
Low levels of E.coli contamination in the Burnham Water Supply Scheme have resulted in the Selwyn District Council sterilising (chlorinating) all consumer tanks in the area.
Council Utilities Technician Jane Lloyd said the levels were not high enough to trigger a boil water notice, but the Council decided to take precautionary measures and hooked up a temporary chlorine doser on Tuesday morning. Consumers connected to the scheme were immediately circulated with information about the chlorination.
The doser was likely to be switched off on Monday and further water sampling will take place next week to recheck the levels.
Ms Lloyd says the contamination was likely to have been caused by cracks discovered in the well head which have now been sealed. Gates have also been installed around the well to prevent contamination by nearby pets.
“We’re not expecting any ongoing issues. But if anyone has any concerns, they can ring the Assets team at the Council on 03 347 2800,” she says.
