New season of ‘Music
in the Band Rotunda’ kicks off with The Nostalgia Band
ROTORUA 14.02.12: Rotorua’s popular ‘Music in the Band Rotunda’ season returns to Government Gardens this weekend, kicking off with one of the city’s longest running groups, The Nostalgia Band.
A number of local performers will be entertaining at free afternoon concerts for six Sundays beginning this weekend (19 February) with more than one act playing on some days.
‘Music in the Band Rotunda’ has gone from strength-to-strength since its first small event in 2007. It was initiated as a result of public feedback for the historic band rotunda to be used as a performance venue.
Rotorua District Council community arts officer Kiri Jarden says the aim of the concerts is to profile the diverse musical talent that exists in the district.
“This event has an enthusiastic regular audience who come year after year to enjoy live local music during warm sunny afternoons, to tap their toes or have a wee dance, and just enjoy their picnics and good music with friends and family.”
Sunday events at the band Rotunda will feature jazz, blues, orchestral, brass and choral work with performances starting at 1pm and finishing around 2.30pm.
The line-up for the six weeks of ‘Music in the
Band Rotunda’ is as follows:
February 19 The Nostalgia
Band
February 26 Keith Garratt and Friends
March
4 Murray Clark; Fourtunz
March 11 Rotorua Blues and
Sunrise Rockers
March 18 Rotorua Highland Pipe Band; The
Thermalees
March 25 Rotorua Symphonic Band; The Edwards
Brothers
The concerts are funded by Rotorua District Council and Rotorua Trust and entrance is free.
