Council issues Bike Wise challenge to Rotorua businesses
ROTORUA 31.01.12: Rotorua District Council
(RDC) is challenging all local businesses to get on their
bikes for a healthier and happier workplace as part of the
2012 Bike Wise Challenge.
The nationwide challenge
begins tomorrow [1 February] and is a fun competition
between organisations to see who can get the most staff to
ride a bike for at least 10 minutes or 2km during the
month.
Rotorua District Council has been successful in
the Bike Wise Challenge since it began six years ago,
winning the national title for large organisations in 2011,
2008 and 2007, and the Bay of Plenty title in 2010 and
2009.
RDC transport safety & sustainability
coordinator Niki Carling says there are plenty of reasons
why locals should get involved in this year's Bike Wise
Challenge.
“Biking saves money, not just from
petrol costs but from parking charges as well; it keeps you
fit and healthy; you'll arrive at work invigorated from the
fresh air and exercise; you can rediscover our beautiful
city; you’ll do your bit to cut down on congestion;
you’ll be more alert and possibly work more effectively;
you'll enjoy greater teamwork with your colleagues; and
there are also great prizes to be won."
All people
need to do is register online at www.bikewise.co.nz and then
log their ride afterwards, providing it’s at least 10
minutes in duration or 2km in length.
“It’s as
simple as taking a quick ride in your lunch break or a
leisurely weekend ride with friends. It’s not about who
can cycle the furthest but getting mass participation.
“Let’s make it another big effort by Rotorua this
year and show the country why we can lay claim to the title
of New Zealand’s top cycling city.”
Meanwhile,
bright green bikes are popping up at various city locations
to help celebrate Bike Wise Month from 1 to 29
February.
