Earthquake relief fund criteria approved

Media Release

Earthquake relief fund criteria approved

Criteria for Selwyn Earthquake Relief Fund have been approved by the Council.

The Council adopted terms of reference for the Selwyn Fund, to be overseen by a committee comprising the Mayor, two councillors, the Community Development Advisor and the Selwyn Recovery Support Service Coordinator.

Council has received $73,500 in donations from individuals, groups, organisations and businesses to allocate to the residents of the district. A number of non-governmental and government funds had been made available to people in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, and Council was now seeing an emerging need for financial assistance where people did not qualify for other funds.

“We’ve let the dust settle and have been in touch with the community monitoring the need for this fund. We’ve now got a good picture about what the criteria should be and how it will be allocated,” Mayor Kelvin Coe says.

Criteria include that one application will be considered from each household or community organisation, and they must be based in the Selwyn District; and a maximum of 50% of the fund will be allocated to community organisations.

The amount of each grant will be around $250, depending on the application

Application forms are available on the Council website, www.selwyn.govt.nz/earthquakes or from Council library/service centres.
