Moving into Summer Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Paul Bruce!

As a weather forecaster, I am pleased that the weather has finally settled down as we move into the festive season and our summer months. I hope you will take the chance to visit our Regional Parks, especially the latest addition at Baring Head. It’s a spectacular spot to visit, with stunning views, dramatic cliffs and the baring head lighthouse.

Greater Wellington has been reviewing public transport services in the urban areas of Wellington City over recent months and has come up with an initial plan. They include options for significant increases of services in some areas. Your feedback will be sought in the first half of next year, and implementation will occur from late 2012. I share your frustration at the slowness of the pace, but the changes are going to be quite big, and we want to make sure we get it right.

Our transport fare structure is also under the spotlight, and I am on a reference committee which will meet for the first time this December. This comprehensive fare review, will include integrated ticketing, a must if we are to obtain a truly integrated transport network. Public consultation on this review will begin in May 2012.

And finally there's less water to go around this summer. Maintaining water supplies will be tougher than usual as one of our two water storage lakes has been emptied so that it can be upgraded. The seismic strengthening is needed to meet national dam safety guidelines and give greater certainty that in a large earthquake the lakes will keep their water. If everybody saves a bit more water, there’s a better chance of getting by without taking the Hutt River below minimum levels or imposing restrictions. See what you can do!
