Wellington’s Waterfront Lights up

This evening, all 375,000 lights on the Telecom Christmas Tree were switched on at 9pm in Waitangi Park, Wellington.

The Tree, which has been a family destination for three years, will remain open all day, every day for people to enjoy the magic Christmas experience until Boxing Day.

Other Trees will also be placed in Auckland (Opening 2nd Dec) and Christchurch (Opening 11th Dec), with each Tree linked to one another via fibre, enabling anyone visiting the Telecom Tree website to design a light sequence, and watch it play live for friends and visitors to see.

Wellington Telecom Christmas Tree Facts

• The Telecom Tree is over 26 metres tall or the same height as a seven storey building – around 85 feet.

• There are 375,000 lights on the Telecom Tree including 37,000 programmable LED lights that allow over 16 million possible colour combinations.

• 156 wires and 20,000 cable ties link the lights of the Telecom Tree.

• The Telecom Tree took seven days to build and required a 20 tonne crane and a team of 20 people to complete.

• The Telecom Tree has six anchors that go six meters deep into the ground.

• All three Telecom Trees are connected to the internet and to each other via two 100Mbit fibre cables (each).

• Each Telecom Tree has a weather station at the top that measures wind direction and speed.

• There are three Santaline phone boxes set up at the Telecom Tree with approximately 25,000 calls made from them.
