Public asked to comment on Walking and Cycling Strategy

Media release

Public asked to comment on reviewed Whangarei District Walking and Cycling Strategy

Public feedback on the reviewed Whangarei District Walking and Cycling Strategy is being called for.

The Strategy outlines a long term plan for improving cycling and walking routes throughout the District. It puts proposed routes in order of priority and gives an idea of costs for the improvements.

The Strategy was initially developed in 2007 in response to the growing awareness of the need to provide alternative methods of transport.

Since the Strategy was adopted a number of major projects have started and some have been completed. These include State Highway 1 improvements, the CBD/Town Basin revitalisation and approval for the Lower Hatea Crossing, which includes a cycle and walkway and will create an inner city ‘loop’ between the Town Basin and Pohe Island/William Fraser Memorial Park.

This progress, new plans and changes to national funding programmes have sparked the review. Council staff worked with a Walking and Cycling Reference Group, which includes representatives from Sport Northland, Bike Northland, NZ Police, Manaia Primary Health Organisation, the Northland District Health Board and other interest groups, to prepare the draft Strategy.

Implementation of the Strategy will depend on funding and resources being made available through a number of different sources including Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency, but also potentially contributions being made by local communities and other interest groups on particular projects.

Council is now seeking public feedback on the draft Strategy. A background report has also been prepared which describes how the strategy has been reviewed.

People who are interested in commenting on the Strategy are invited to view it online at www.wdc.govt.nz and to put their comments in writing using the online submission form or a form picked up from Customer Service counters at Forum North or Ruakaka. Copies of the Strategy may also be viewed at these locations.
