Whales Successfully Refloated At Papamoa Beach
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has successfully refloated two of the three whales – believed to be Gray’s Beaked Whales – that became stranded at Papamoa Beach today.
The whales – two adults and a juvenile – became stranded today. While the juvenile died, DOC staff – along with Marine Mammal Medics from Project Jonah – stabilised the two adults, which have now been refloated and have returned out to sea.
The whale rescue was separate from the wildlife recovery work underway around the Rena. It will not be known whether this stranding is related to the Rena until the post mortem of the juvenile whale is completed.
