Seminar this week for building industry March deadline
People working in Northland’s building design and construction industry have until 1 March 2012 to become licensed building practitioners.
A special presentation on 20 October will explain all about who should be licensed and how to go about getting licensed.
The licensed building practitioners (LBP) scheme is a central government initiative that has been in process since 2004.
A recent Order in Council enabled the legislation to become active throughout New Zealand defining all restricted building work to be supervised or carried out by an LBP from March 2012.
The scheme promotes, recognises and supports professional skills and behaviour in the building construction industry.
It is administered by the Department of Building and Housing, and will affect most people working in the industry.
“However, many builders, designers and subcontractors are unaware of this requirement or underestimate it’s impact,” says Bruce Rogers, Whangarei District Council Building Compliance Manager.
“Northland’s three district councils and the Northland Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Building have organised a seminar on 20 October to help them decide whether the legislation applies to them, and how they go about becoming icensed.”
The seminar will be held in the Cafler Suite in the Forum North building in Rust Ave, Whangarei, between 3.00pm and 5.15pm on 20 October.
“Continuing Professional Development points are on offer for attendance, as well as a $500 door prize,” Bruce Rogers says.
Industry practitioners wanting to attend the seminar or find out more about it should contact Caroline Wilson at Whangarei District Council by emailing cwilson@wdc.govt.nz or phoning (09) 4304450.
“It is important that everyone working in the building industry in Northland attends this seminar,” Bruce Rogers says.
“As well as ensuring they can continue working after 1 March 2012, becoming an LBP means receiving many further personal and business benefits which we will explain on the day.”
