Artificial turf in Civic Square has new home

13 October 2011

Artificial turf in Civic Square has new home

The artificial turf in Civic Square will be removed tomorrow (Friday) and transported to a new, permanent home.

The turf was laid on 29 August to promote the sport of rugby during Rugby World Cup 2011 and to provide a recreational space for people to enjoy.

The project was a partnership between Wellington City Council, the Wellington Rugby Football Union and the turf manufacturer, Sports Technology International (STI).

The turf has been very popular with the public for recreational football and touch rugby and as a favourite lunchtime destination.

About 800 children used the turf to participate in a Rippa Rugby programme involving 37 schools.

The turf and shock pad underneath have been purchased by Clyde Quay school in Mt Victoria where it will be used for multi-sports.
