Celebrate RWC 2011 locally this weekend
Communities taking part in Auckland's Adopt-a-second-team programme have a huge variety of free events planned for the Semi Finals weekend of Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).
* Glen Innes Village who
adopted Samoa for RWC 2011 goes global this Saturday with
its own Auckland International Carnival on from 9.30am to
6.30pm. This free event features music by local and emerging
talent, including J. Williams and Vince Harder, plenty for
the kids to do and international foods to try. The
centerpiece for the day, a carnival costume parade, kicks
off at 10.30am.
* It's all happening in Orewa this Saturday as the town centre comes alive with a market day (9am-3pm) and Japanese Festival (11am-4pm), celebrating the area's support of their adopted team Japan. Highlights include workshops, performances and demonstrations of Japanese tea ceremony, origami, shodo (calligraphy), taiko drumming and more.
* If you're heading north, Warkworth's Huge Day Out is worth a stop on Saturday. Part of the annual Kowhai Festival, this is a family affair starting from 9am with street stalls and performers, lots of activities for the kids, a wine marquee and jazz maestro Nathan Haines playing live from 4pm The evening's RWC 2011 Semi Final will also be screened near the wharf.
* Panmure is abuzz with activity as local businesses, schools and the Marist Rugby Club adopt Ireland in support of the area's Irish settler history. This Saturday from 10am, the centre is hosting the Panmure Team Challenge, where teams will navigate their way to key Panmure landmarks while completing challenges testing their sports skills, Irish knowledge, creativity and detective skills.
* In a country that can grow almost anything, Farmers' Markets are the name of the game on Sunday, 16 October, with several Adopt-a-second-team centres selling local cheeses, pickles, flowers, meat and more. This weekend check out Clevedon Village (8.30am-12pm), Waiheke Island (10am-1pm) or Orewa (8.30am-12pm).
