After weeks of hard work, grit and determination, now comes the crunch time with Southside Arts Festival 2011 kicking off this week!
Days away from it’s official launch on October 14th, it’s not just the festival opening it’s arms to embrace visitors to it’s events - It’s all of South Auckland. Both local and international visitors are being invited to immerse themselves in the many different flavors on offer throughout the region, and enrich themselves in the multi-cultures that call “southside” home.
Opening Weekend Highlights Include…
•
The incredible Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab 2011
showcase – which demonstrates what three choreographers of
Pacific descent have work-shopped under the guidance of
senior dance mentor, Neil Ieremia.
• Cult
Couture, a night of fashion and innovation. One of the
crown jewels of previous festivals, expect to be wowed not
only by the entertainment on offer but also by designs from
some of New Zealand’s fashion elite.
• One of
the most colorful family day’s out to happen in Auckland,
Color The Sky 2011 invites kite enthusiasts, amateurs
and budding kite designers to take to the sky – for free.
• Papakura residents get their monthly comedy
fix with Laugh Out Loud – Papakura, featuring Billy
T and FRED award nominee Simon McKinney.
• …
and visual arts this year seem to be one of the biggest
features of Southside Arts Festival, with a number of
exhibtions opening including works from Tiffany Singh,
Tessa Laid, Lisa Crowley, Matt Henry, Douglas Bagnall,
Sopolemalama Felipe Tohi along what is a wonderful walk
around Auckland Botanic Gardens as part of Sculpture In
The Gardens.
This is only a selection of the fantastic range of events on offer at this years Southside Arts Festival 2011, which really has something for everyone.
