French Friends raise Funds for Christchurch Colleges

When a devastating earthquake struck Christchurch on the 22 of February, a large number of French high school students were visiting the city as part of school exchange programmes. Some came from the Lycée Marguerite de Navarre, in Bourges in central France, and were staying with students from Shirley Boys’ High School and Rangi Ruru College. The French pupils returned home soon after the quake but they were determined to help their New Zealand friends. The school, parents and students began raising funds for the cause.

Their donations will be presented to the Christchurch schools at a reception at the Visions Restaurant on the Christchurch Polytechnic Campus on Monday the 26 of September at 3.00pm by His Excellency Mr Francis Etienne, Ambassador of France. Members of the media are welcome to attend this function organised by the Alliance française de Christchurch and the Honorary Consul of France to Christchurch, Mrs Martine Marshall-Durieux.

A second cheque will be presented during this ceremony, this time to His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Bob Parker. Mr Damien Yvon, manager of the Clos Henri vineyard near Blenheim will hand over the funds that were raised at an auction of fine wines from the Sancerre region on the 9 of July. Mrs Sue Wells, Christchurch’s representative to the organisation of the world’s wine-growing capitals, will also be there.
