Northland goes red for Rugby World Cup 2011

12 September 2011

Northland goes red for Rugby World Cup 2011

The Northland region is now wrapped up in red as everyone jumps on board to show their support for the ‘Paint It Red’ campaign to welcome Canada, Japan and Tonga for Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).

“From window displays through to flying country flags, Northland business and community groups have really got in behind the initiative,” says Northland 2011 Regional Co-ordinator Stewart McElwain.

“The flag bunting proved so popular nationally that it sold out last week – all 57,000 units of it – and our ‘Paint It Red Wednesdays’, where Northlanders are encouraged to wear the colour red throughout September, has really taken off,” he added.

“The arrival in the region of our first host team Canada, on Sunday 4 September, just gave extra momentum to the ‘Paint It Red’ campaign last week and it’s been great to have the local support” says Mr McElwain.

“I just wanted to thank all those who have made a real effort to make our host teams feel welcome,” he said.

Around 42kms of ‘Paint It Red’ banner has been distributed free to help decorate businesses and communities on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway through members of the Northland 2011 Working Group, including the region’s three district councils, the Northland Regional Council, Enterprise Northland and Destination Northland. It has also been supported by local iwi, sporting, business associations, tourism and other groups.

The next ‘red’ team to hit Northland is Tonga who arrive in Whangarei today (SUBS: Monday 12 September) before their Pool match against Canada at the Northland Events Centre on Wednesday 14 September.

There are still tickets available for both Northland matches, but Tournament organisers are expected near or capacity crowds so don’t delay, buy your tickets now and avoid queuing on match day. Buy online at www.rugbyworldcup.com/tickets or at the Ticketek outlet at Forum North, Rust Avenue, hours: 8am – 4.30pm.
