Auckland Transport gives Devonport Wharf a makeover

Auckland Transport Media Release Friday 9 September

Auckland Transport gives Devonport Wharf significant makeover

The most significant makeover to Devonport wharf in the last twenty years has just been completed by Auckland Transport.

The refurbished facility has been repainted throughout the interior and exterior as well as the installation of new wooden seating, extra plantings and greenery, drinking water fountains, and improvements to signage and toilet facilities. Outside, a number of bike shelters with overhead canopies have been installed.

Victoria Wharf next door, which is predominantly used for recreation, has also had improvements to health and safety, such as new hand rails, lifesaving rings and newly installed bait boards to give fishermen a place to chop their bait.

The refurbishment will benefit daily commuters and the numbers of people using the facility has already increased in the short time the wharf has been refurbished.

Devonport Wharf's new look is smart, fresh and ready to welcome visitors and commuters, says Mark Lambert, Public Transport Operations Manager for Auckland Transport.

"Support from Mayor Len Brown and the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board has been invaluable in bringing life to the wharf and realising the tourism potential of Devonport village.

"Ferries are an important part of Auckland's public transport network. The facilities our customers wait on are integral to making public transport even more attractive as a transport choice".

Auckland Transport is refurbishing the wharf in a two-stage upgrade, with the second phase, to carry out structural improvements, commencing in 2012.
