Small field produces big tricks in Uni Snow Games Big Air
Friday September 2: The field of competitors might have been small, but the tricks were anything but in today’s Uni Snow Games Big Air at
Treble Cone.
While the prospect of the Skull Candy-sponsored Big Air might have intimidated some students, those who took on the
15-foot jump did so in style.
Attempts at 740s were not quite landed, but there were plenty of 540s and grabs, making for some entertaining viewing in
Treble Cone’s terrain park.
University Sport New Zealand National Events Manager Peter McDonald said today’s (Friday September 2) Big Air was more
about quality than quantity and many of the competitors delivered.
Waikato University’s Natalie Good wowed fellow competitors and the judges to earn the ‘Best Style’ award as well as take
out the gold in the female snowboard category, ahead of Hannah Orchard, of the University of Canterbury.
Good has been competing in the New Zealand Big Air Series and her experience shone through, as she impressed both the
judges and fellow students with her tricks.
Otago University snowboarder Marc Andri Riedi claimed yet another gold of the Uni Snow Games in the male snowboard
section, and also pulled off the best trick of the day to finish ahead of Auckland University’s Jonathan Alridge and
University of Canterbury’s Lance Cotter.
In the skiing, Alexandrine Campbell’s gold medal was uncontested, as the sole entry in the female category, while the
more competitive male section was won by Dominic Campbell, representing the University of Canterbury.
Cameron Fulton, also of the University of Canterbury was second.
James Webster, of Otago University, put in a gutsy effort with his attempts at hand drag 540s earning him the ‘Best
Bail’ title, and he did enough to secure third place.
McDonald said this year’s Uni Snow Games had been blessed with brilliant weather, which contributed to the relaxed
atmosphere throughout the week so far.
“The week has been awesome,” he said.
“There has been great rivalry amongst the campuses but there is also great camaraderie on and off the slopes, which is
what the Uni Snow Games is all about.”
The Uni Snow Games will wind up tomorrow (Saturday September 3) with Cross Country at Snow Farm.
