Christchurch Earthquakes – Impact on aquatics and recovery
Key Note Presentation: The Christchurch Earthquakes
– Impact on aquatics and
recovery:
Christchurch has been shattered by
recent major earthquakes. Every New Zealander has been
shaken by these natural disasters and the impact they have
had, and will continue to have long into the future, on the
citizens of the garden city. Recent government estimates put
the cost of rebuilding the city in the vicinity of $7
billion.
The effect on recreation and sport has the potential to be devastating. In his role as the Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Manager, John Filsell is at the forefront of efforts to get the city’s recreational facilities and sports infrastructure operating. Through listening to John’s presentation you will better understand the scale of the challenges faced by Christchurch and its residents.
To recover the city will require great leadership, collaboration, and a sound vision. John’s address will provide insights on the Christchurch City Council’s plans for rebuilding with particular emphasis on aquatic facilities and sustaining vital water safety education.
This promises to be one of the most interesting and dramatic presentations scheduled for Water: Our Fatal Attraction, the New Zealand Water Safety Conference 2011. It’s something you will not want to miss.
