National Secondary Schools Rugby League Tournament
Enjoys Positive Football Played in Excellent Conditions
Auckland, New Zealand August 22, 2011 - The National Secondary Schools Rugby League tournament kicked off at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura today in perfect conditions for great rugby league.
The day started with a Powhiri at the Papakura High School Marae, followed by a Tournament Welcome featuring presentations from NZRL staff members Tony Kemp and Ruben Wiki, and Vic Tamati from ‘It’s Not OK!’ at Papakura High School.
Kasey King, Counties Manukau Zone General Manager said “The ‘It’s Not OK!’ presentation was excellent. Vic was well worth hearing; he gave a fascinating talk and held nothing back about how he’d turned his life around. I know the players who go on to take part in the Leadership Programme on Tuesday will get a lot out of it.”
The participating schools then made their way to Bruce Pulman Park, where they had team photos taken before preparing to take the field.
All 16 teams played their Round One matches in front of a vocal and supportive crowd of friends and family who made the most of the great weather and well prepared facilities to enjoy a day of excellent rugby league.
A number of NRL accredited player agents were on the sidelines to see how the players performed, as were the four tournament selectors, who will be naming a tournament Merit Side at the awards evening on Thursday.
The Vodafone Warriors were at the ground as the first games got under way, and as well as signing posters and balls etc for players, family and friends they took time to watch some of the tournament matches.
NZRL Football Manager Tony Kemp said “It’s been a fantastic first day, the atmosphere and the spirit in which the footy has been played is awesome. We’d especially like to acknowledge all the teams who’ve come from outside Auckland and a special thank you to Rangitoto College who stepped in at the last moment to field a team when another school had to pull out.”
