The pastry flew tonight (Friday, 19 August 2011) at the inaugural The Pie Men National Pie Eating Champs in Hamilton.
The event winner Rob Puru, beat out 12 other entrants for the prize of a year’s supply of free pies from The Pie Men bakery. He chomped through his meaty pastry in just 17.188 seconds, a possible Guinness World Record breaking time.
The competition marks New Zealand’s first ever National Pie Day, to be held annually on the third Friday in August, as declared by The Pie Men a family owned and operated bakery in Mahana Road, Hamilton.
The Pie Men National Pie Eating Champs is sponsored by The Pie Men, the Cock & Bull, and The Rock FM.
