Willow tree removal on Park Terrace
Following the aftershocks on 13 June 2011, the Christchurch City Council’s arborists carried out safety inspections of
trees in the Botanic Gardens, Hagley Park, Avon and Heathcote riverbanks and in high-use parks in the eastern suburbs.
During the inspections, a willow tree on the bank of the Avon River, opposite 76 Park Terrace, was found to have
sustained serious damage to its trunk. In an attempt to retain the tree, urgent work was carried out on the willow tree
on 16 June. This included the removal of a large part of the canopy to prevent it from failing.
The willow tree is located in a high profile location, near the Park Terrace road and footpath Due to the poor condition
and deterioration of the tree, the willow tree needs to be removed. This work is planned to occur before the end of
August 2011, along with routine maintenance pruning of other willow trees on Park Terrace.
It is intended that this tree and other trees that have been removed since the 22 February 2011 earthquake will be
replaced at a later stage.
