Orion snowstorm response: 12.00pm, Wednesday 17 August 2011
Power reconnection continues
Orion hopes to reconnect about 60 customers without power in Christchurch and central Canterbury by nightfall - however access to some badly affected rural areas may still be difficult.
Anyone currently without power in the region should contact Orion on 03 363 9898 to ensure the network company is aware of all issues and can systematically work to get the power back on.
Customers without power are mainly in parts of Leeston, Tai Tapu and Dunsandel, and in small pockets around Christchurch city. No further snow-related power faults have been found this morning, which is encouraging, says Orion General Manager Commercial Rob Jamieson.
As in other areas of the country, electricity demand on the Orion network is higher than usual for this time of year due to the extreme conditions.
"More residents have stayed home over the past few days, with increased use of electric heating and appliances which has pushed demand up a bit," Mr Jamieson says.
Orion continues to monitor the weather forecast closely and crews remain ready to respond quickly to any further issues.
Important messages for residents:
• If your power is off, please contact Orion on 03 363 9898.
• Contact friends, family or neighbours for help where necessary - wrap up well and stay warm.
