Waikato Museum in running for Resene Total Colour Award

Bold and dramatic hues helped transform Waikato Museum into a prehistoric wonderland earlier this year – and now the colour selection could see them land a national Resene Total Colour Award.
Waikato Museum has been named as a finalist in the Resene Total Colour Awards’ Display category for its use of colour during the ‘Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs + Babies’ exhibition. The exhibition, toured by Gondwana Exhibitions, was exhibited at Waikato Museum from September 2010 to February 2011.
Eleven Resene colours were used in the exhibition space for Hatching the Past, from a ‘dirty’ neutral, through to spicy warm tones, swampy greens and a mellow minx. The selection aimed to make the space dramatic, yet friendly and inviting for a family audience. Colour was also used to clearly define the exhibition spaces for visitors – with a jagged line (resembling a cracked eggshell) spanning the perimeter of the gallery and dinosaur silhouettes featuring on the walls.
Waikato Museum Exhibition Designer Steph Chalmers, who was responsible for the colour selection and interior design of Hatching the Past, says she is always excited to see the impact that colour choices can have on an exhibition.
“One of the most exciting things about designing exhibitions is seeing how colour can change a space and bring it to life,” she said.
The winners of the Resene Total Colour Awards will be announced on 24 August, with awards to be presented in nine categories as well as a ‘Colour Master – Nightingale Award’ for the best overall use of colour.
Over 100 entries were received for this year’s Resene Total Colour Awards. For more information on the awards visit www.resene.co.nz/colourawards
