Snow cuts power to small parts of Christchurch and central Canterbury
Heavy snow has cut power to a few hundred customers in Christchurch and central Canterbury overnight. Parts of Sumner, Tai Tapu and Springston are currently without power, and Orion crews are working as fast as possible to restore power to these areas.
Other areas affected by snow-related power outages overnight included parts of Akaroa and Little River. Power has now been restored to these areas.
Orion General Manager Commercial Rob Jamieson says heavy snow has built up on lines and poles in areas, and caused some lines to break.
"In general the network is coping pretty well, with fewer issues at this stage than we experienced during the July snow storm. However, it's likely to be a longer event this time, and our crews are ready to respond quickly to any further issues and make any repairs needed," Mr Jamieson says.
Orion urges Christchurch and central Canterbury residents to keep off the roads as much as possible today, to allow crews to get to jobs safely and quickly to restore power.
"Another good reason to keep the roads clear is to avoid any vehicle collisions with power poles, which would cause further issues for us," Mr Jamieson says.
