Photographic Project to Focus on Out and Proud Wellingtonians
Stefanie Upchurch, an honours degree student in photography at Massey University is looking for queer Wellingtonians to be photographed for an upcoming exhibition.
“I really want to capture a diverse range of LGBTI people” says Upchurch. “I want to celebrate local Wellington queerness by photographing everyday people who are comfortable and proud about who they are”.
The photographs will become part of Upchurch’s degree portfolio, be deposited with an archive and curated for an exhibition on the not-for-profit queer media website PrideNZ.com.
PrideNZ.com administrator Gareth Watkins is right behind the project. “It’s really important that the diversity and energy of Wellington’s queer culture is seen – not just by us, but by the wider community. Seeing diverse, proud people just being themselves is a strong political statement.”
Upchurch is currently seeking participants for the photographic project. “I really want to work in a collaborative way with participants to create positive images of proud people.” “I am looking to create an exhibition of diverse ages, sexualities and genders that will inspire viewers now and in the future”.
