Wellington Phoenix and adidas unveil new season strip
Wednesday, 10 August 2011
The Wellington Phoenix and its new apparel sponsor adidas today unveiled the team’s new uniform, in front of fans in Wellington.
The yellow and black match kit was designed by adidas in collaboration with the club. The thick vertical stripes that have characterised the team’s uniform for the past few years have been channeled into the torso of the jersey. These thick stripes are dear to the heart of the Phoenix, and were originally drawn from those within the team’s crest.
The thick stripes are accented by adidas’s signature triple stripe, which runs across the shoulders and down the sleeves.
“It’s a bold look that we believe is the most striking of any team in the Hyundai A-League,” says adidas Sports Marketing Strategic Manager Paul Stephens. “It also features the same patented adidas technology that goes into the uniforms of teams such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.”
The strip contains Formotion and Climacool technology, to allow players freedom of movement while keeping them dry, cool and comfortable. For the first time, players can choose between short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts.
Another first for the Phoenix is a separate supporter’s replica shirt, which will be released in stores from September.
The new playing kit was revealed by key Phoenix players at a public event at Wellington’s Midland Park on Lambton Quay shortly after midday today.
The kit will debut this coming season, which kicks off in October. adidas has signed a four-year commitment to be the Phoenix’s official apparel supplier, which will run until at least the end of the 2015 A-League season.
Phoenix CEO Nathan Greenham says the club is delighted with its new kit. “It’s confident and bold – just like the Phoenix team. This season there will be even more reason for our players and fans to wear our strip with pride.”
Adds Phoenix Captain Andrew Durante: “The strong colours are great. It’s a uniform that really seems to fizz with energy. We’re looking forward to harnessing that energy out on the field come October.”
