Body found in Waikato River identified

The body of a man found submerged by a bridge over the Waikato River has been identified.

He was 35-year-old Hamilton man, Nicholas 'Tommy' ATKINS.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said Mr ATKINS had been missing from his Fairview Downs home since the early hours of 30 July.

"A post-mortem examination will be carried out in Auckland today and it will be for the Coroner to determine the cause of Mr ATKINS' death."

"Mr ATKINS' body was found submerged in the river, not in plain sight. It has come to our attention that a number of people may have seen something out of place in the water prior to the discovery and I would urge people in similar circumstances to make contact with Police as quickly as possible."

Mr Thornton said such calls will be treated in confidence.
