Hike4hunger 2011 Ready for World Hunger Day

9 August 2011
MEDIA RELEASE

Hike4hunger 2011 Ready to Step Out towards World Food Day

Take a moment to consider the following contrast broadcast to Australian television last night...

Two amateur chefs battling it out for the title of 2011 MasterChef assembling dishes of the most elaborate imagination and sophisticated palate while on another channel, the devastating famine in Somalia unfolds taking with it the lives and hopes of whole families. One image represents a triumph of modern society; an indulgence of sophistication and creativity. The other represents a tragedy of modern society; international helplessness towards extreme famine caused by an intractable civil war.

An abundance of food; a complete absence of food.

And at a time where there is enough food to feed the world, such a contrast gets our hike4hunger campaign off the couch and into action!

We are an international movement to raise awareness about this global hunger crisis, to build solidarity behind those afflicted by hunger and encourage new behaviours in both the privileged and underprivileged worlds to close the gap. We do this by co-ordinating the following activities around the world towards World Food Day on 16 October via our online presence at www.hike4hunger.org :
• Individuals taking a leadership role to organise a hike of solidarity with their family and friends = Day Hikes
• School kids taking a leadership role to organise an event at their school to commemorate World Food Day and enter a prize of $5,000 = School Award
• Pilgrims wanting to step out on a 8 day trek from Canberra to Mt. Kosciusko in Australia for our flagship event from the heart of Government to the top of the Country = Australian Pilgrimage

With just over two months to go until World Food Day on 16 October, we are ready for your registrations!

Please visit our website at www.hike4hunger.org for more information on how to participate, or send us an email at contact@hike4hunger.org for more information. This year, we are hoping to get over 20 countries involved, up from 13 countries last year, and raise $125,000. But to do this, we need your participation and your support.

The issue of global hunger has never been more important. And because we live in a more connected world it affects us all, whether you are one of the lucky ones watching MasterChef or not.

Our 2011 campaign message is simple: every time you think “What will we have for dinner tonight?” consider the family in Somalia that may have just eaten their last meal. They are thinking “Will there be any dinner tonight?”
