Save Hillside and Hutt rail workshops petition to be presented tomorrow
Rail workers from Lower Hutt, whose jobs are under threat, will present a petition to Dunedin South MP Clare Curran on the steps of Parliament today.
The petition, signed by 12,000 people since it was launched in mid June, calls on KiwiRail to build rolling stock in New Zealand.
40 Dunedin workers were made redundant last month. Now up to 30 positions at Lower Hutt’s workshop are also at risk, according to statements from KiwiRail.
The redundancies are a result of the KiwiRail purchasing rolling stock and electric units overseas, rather than having them made locally.
