Clean Up Week is coming 20-27 August

Mayor Ray Wallace is urging residents to help give Lower Hutt a good spruce up before the Rugby World Cup by taking part in Clean Up Week which runs from 20 to 27 August.

The annual event involves schools, businesses and community groups choosing a spot in the city to remove graffiti, litter and other debris.

Last year 22 schools and 25 other groups – totalling 5,800 participants – took part. The Council distributed 2,000 rubbish bags, thousands of pairs of gloves, and organised rubbish pickup to groups who registered.

Mayor Wallace, also patron of Keep Hutt City Beautiful which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, wants as many people as possible to give a helping hand to clean-up their city.

“Clean Up Week is a chance for people to roll up their sleeves and come together to make our city a cleaner, more attractive place that we can all be proud of.

“Also with the Rugby World Cup just around the corner we want to give visitors a good impression of our city.”

Events planned around the city include:

• Dive and Ski HQ is organising a dive and beach clean up around Petone Wharf on 27 August at 10am.
• The Rotary Club of Hutt Valley is arranging a clean up of the Hutt Riverbank in Seaview on 27 August at 9am
• The Rotary Club of Eastern Hutt is cleaning up the Hutt Riverbank between Kennedy-Good Bridge and the Pomare Railway Bridge on 20 August
• The Stokes Valley Clean Up group will be picking up litter and removing graffiti along the Stokes Valley Stream on 23 August at 10am.
