The Wonder of Existence
New Zealand Youth Choir sings Purcell, Britten, Schumann and Brahms
Friday, September 2,
Nelson Cathedral, 7.30pm
Nelson’s glorious cathedral provides the perfect setting for the New Zealand Youth Choir’s latest offering, The Wonder of Existence. The choir will sing music exploring many facets of life, written by composers through the ages who sought to touch the mysterious and thrilling beauty at its heart.
Music from contemporary New Zealand mingles with the ecclesiastical, Classical and Romantic traditions of the Old World. The works of Purcell, Britten, Schumann, Brahms, Sweelinck, Howells, Schafer and several NZ composers offer a rich sampling of human experience from the Middle Ages until the present.
The NZYC is conducted for this concert by David Squire, who led his Rangitoto College chamber choir, The Fundamentals, in a platinum-award winning performance at New Zealand’s 2008 Big Sing, as well as winning gold awards every year at the KBB Music Festival for over a decade. Squire was awarded a New Zealander of the Year Local Heroes Medal for services to Music Education.
The New Zealand Youth Choir has achieved considerable success since its formation in 1979. Performances around New Zealand and eight international tours have firmly established the choir’s reputation for consistency, energy and excellence. The choir is auditioned nationally with membership open to singers between the ages of 18 and 25.
One of its greatest achievements was during a five-week international tour to Europe in June and July 1999 when NZYC won the ‘Choir of the World’ title at the International Music Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. In 2010 the NZYC participated in the NZ International Arts Festival in Wellington and its international tour in June/July included performances in Singapore, South Korea, the World Expo in Shanghai and Australia.
