Media Release: Wellington Tramways Union submit on Greater Wellingotn Public Transport Plan
The Wellington Tramways Union who represent the majority of Bus Drivers working in the Wellington Region have made a submission on the Greater Wellington Public Transport Plan.
In this submission the union disputed claims in the Wellington City Council submission on the same plan that recent accidents in the Willis and Manners were the result of drivers speed and lack of care. In their submission the WCC called for contractors to lose their contracts if drivers repeatidly speed for drive dangerously.
"Penalising drivers and bus companies for dangerous driving is all very well" says Nick Kelly President of the Wellington Tramways Union, "but in the recent accidents in the Wellington CBD the problem hasn't been drivers speed, but pedestrian behaviour and the council's design of new roads. Any penalities should be given to those that caused the problem, which in this case is not the bus drivers".
The submission also calls for greater protection for drivers wages and conditions in tendering for Metlink bus contracts. It also calls for stronger standards of buses being used on these runs.
