Rivers watched through the night

MEDIA RELEASE

Rivers watched through the night

Emergency management staff from Horizons Regional Council will be keeping a close eye on the region’s river levels tonight.

Horizons incident controller, Allan Cook, said that although most of the region’s rivers have peaked, staff will keep a close eye on them throughout the night.

“The Manawatu and Whanganui rivers are dropping and, although more rain is predicted we do not anticipate there to be any cause for concern,” explained Mr Cook.

“That said, the variable weather pattern we are experiencing can change things quickly and we’ll continue to monitor and review the situation.”

Mr Cook advised that there is some surface flooding around and drivers should take care on the roads.

“There’s been a lot of rain in a relatively short space of time which means the ground is saturated and surface flooding is to be expected.”

The public are advised to exercise caution when driving and check the AA’s website, http://maps.aa.co.nz/traffic/roadwatch for information on road closures.

Horizons will continue to monitor the situation and update the public if necessary
