Mid-Winter Swim To Raise Funds For Coastguard Kawau
Keen swimmers and boaties will brave the cold and take to the water on Sunday 17th July for Coastguard Kawau’s annual mid-winter Splash and Dash – a fun swim to bring the local community together and raise money for the Unit.
The 300 metre swim will start at 8.30am at the Sandspit Wharf and with the water temperature expected to reach as low as 10 degrees, wetsuits and flippers are recommended, though organisers are encouraging swimmers to be creative with their attire.
This year the event is being organised by 14 year old Kristin School student, Kirsty Sutherland, as part of her International Baccalaureate assessments. President of the Coastguard Kawau Unit, Roger Davies, says Kirsty’s efforts have helped ensure the Splash and Dash will be a great success.
“The event is now in its fourth year, with funds raised from the previous events going toward important investments like the 10.3m Naiad vessel, Kawau Rescue. The money raised from this year’s swim will help the unit to continue their day to day operations, ensuring the safety of boaties in the Sandspit and Kawau area.
“With all the effort and hard work Kirsty has been putting in, we are looking forward to what I’m sure will be another great Splash and Dash.”
Although the event is about having fun and braving the cold, the safety of participating swimmers still comes first and foremost.
“Kawau Rescue will be patrolling the bay, ensuring other vessels heed our instructions and stay out of the area during the event,” says Mr Davies.
To register for the 300 metre swim or simply a plunge into the bay and help raise funds for Coastguard Kawau, teams and individuals of all ages can email or register on the day from 7.30am.
