The Christchurch earthquakes, cardiac arrest following drug poisoning, superwarfarin poisoning, Monday morning fever,
party drugs, and more. These issues will be discussed at the Winter Symposium of the Australasian College for Emergency
Medicine being held in Queenstown, New Zealand, July 10-12.
Highlights for Tuesday July 12
10.30 Dr Jan Bone, emergency physician at Canterbury District Health Board
Dr Bone will discuss the Christchurch earthquake in February, and at 3 pm the Christchurch Earthquake Disaster
Management Panel will hold a Q session.
This presentation offers a personal recall of the earthquake and how the emergency department, hospital, and city lived
with it and through it.
“All of us have dealt with disasters - it’s what we are trained for - but they are always external events.
“We set up, manage them, then pat ourselves on the back. All the while we are intact. Being a part of a disaster and
still having to perform brings a whole load of unexpected ramifications.
“It highlights the essence of why we are in medicine and demonstrates the enormous goodwill that makes our hospitals
tick.”
