West Aucklander’s are a traditional lot.
A recent survey of five thousand West Auckland households found that while Westies support increased local
representation on Council, there is no support for any form of unelected representation.
Conducted by the Massey Birdwood Residents Association the survey found that while most respondents agree Local Board
members should be able to sit on the new Auckland Council Committees, there is almost unanimous disapproval of funding
for the Maori Statutory Board and 100% disapproval for a separate Board to represent Pacific Island communities in
Auckland.
However 78.9% of the respondents felt that Local Board members should be able to sit on Council Committees. The survey
also asked residents for their feedback on any rates increases. 57.9% supported a modest rates increase of no more than
two percent.
