“Rough night in” on AUT’s campus raises over $103,000 to help
Lifewise tackle homelessness in Auckland
Organisers of the LIFEWISE Big Sleepout, now in its second year, are once again delighted by its success.
Last night 75 business and community leaders as well as politicians slept rough outside on AUT University’s city campus.
Together they have raised over $103,000 in funds to support Lifewise’s work with homeless people.
Lifewise general manager John McCarthy says the total raised reflects the incredible efforts put in by the group. “We’ve
seen some very driven and creative fundraising and I’d personally like to thank each and every one of the group for
their commitment and their willingness to swap their creature comforts for cold concrete.”
It is anticipated that the total will rise over the coming few days as participants talk about their ‘rough sleeping’
experience with family, friends and colleagues.
“As well as thanking the 75 individuals involved, I’d like to acknowledge the support of AUT University. Not only did
they host the event in Hikuwai Plaza, but Vice-Chancellor Derek McCormack was also one of the 75 brave people sleeping
outside in the rain and cold.”
