Media Statement: Canterbury Aftershocks

Media Statement: Canterbury Aftershocks

Telecom’s mobile and fixed networks in Christchurch continue to be affected by this afternoon’s aftershocks.

Mobile networks continue to be congested, and a number of fixed and mobile network sites are operating on backup power due to widespread mains power loss.

Telecom continues to ask customers to confine phone use to emergency calling only, and to use text messages as an alternative to calling in order to conserve capacity on the network as well as backup power supplies.

Telecom reminds customers who are without mains power that they can use analogue phones which do not require power to operate.

We will monitoring the situation closely overnight and will provide a further update on the state of the network tomorrow morning.

Our thoughts are with the people of Canterbury.
