Canterbury June Earthquake - Federated Farmers Update

With the two large earthquakes this afternoon, Federated Farmers is in the process of texting all Canterbury members, with particular focus on Banks Peninsula. The Federation requests the assistance of media to help farmers report damage to us.

“Can the media please help to communicate our contact numbers if farmers have been affected by the latest earthquakes,” says John Hartnell, Federated Farmers Earthquake spokesperson.

“Federated Farmers Christchurch office has been closed and all staff sent home. With many telephone lines being down, there are three ways for farmers to report to us.

“The best way is by texting Federated Farmers on 027 666 9349. Being an e-text number it doesn’t receive calls but instead collates all the text replies. It will also help to reduce load on the telephone networks.

“If email is working, as it did in February, farmers can also email admin@fedfarm.org.nz.

“Finally, there is 0800 327 646 (0800 FARMING) from tomorrow.

“Initial reports indicate this earthquake is a similar event to the 22 February one. We’ve managed to make contact with some members and they are shaken up but report that they are thankfully okay.

“That said we are still largely in the dark and do have concerns for stock drinking water but unlike February 22, power is on in parts of Banks Peninsula.

“Federated Farmers has initiated contact with Christchurch City Council to see if we may be needed in the coming days.

“It was one call that I sincerely hoped I’d never to have to make again,” Mr Hartnell concluded.
