City Mission’s annual Brown Paper Bag food appeal

Media Release
Monday 13 June 2011

The Wellington City Mission’s annual Brown Paper Bag food appeal starts this week

It’s June, and that’s when The Mission asks fellow Wellingtonians to dig deep and donate non-perishable food items to keep food bank shelves stocked through winter.

64,000 special shopping bags will be inserted into every Dominion Post this Thursday. Once filled, bags can then be dropped off at Shell service stations throughout Wellington, as well as City Mission offices in Newtown, Johnsonville and Titahi Bay right up until Friday 1 July.

Food bank essential items are:

• Cereal
• Pasta and sauces
• Rice
• Meals in a can
• Soup
• Canned or dried vegetables
• Canned fish and meat
• Tinned fruit
• Spreads
• Biscuits and crackers
• Baby food
• Tinned spaghetti and baked beans
• Milk powder
• Sugar
• Toilet rolls
• Toothpaste and toothbrushes
• Soap
• Washing powder

Message from Father Des:

‘If you can, please get behind The Mission again during our annual Brown Paper Bag mid-year food appeal. You can be assured that your non-perishable food donation will be used wisely. City Mission food parcels are not just given out freely, and there is a respectful process that people asking for food from The Mission must go through with our social workers to ensure we are best meeting their needs. We are not a replacement for a supermarket, nor do we wish to be perceived as an easy option for people. We spend quality time with those asking for help, connecting them with our Budget Advice service and other connecting Mission programmes designed to develop self-responsibility and self-respect. Please help us to help others on their road to independence with pride. Thank you!’
