Trams To Arrive At Ports Of Auckland Today
It is not just about containers and cars at Ports of Auckland. Each year through the Multi Cargo division of the port comes a variety of different and interesting cargo.
On Tuesday 7 June, Ports of Auckland will welcome the arrival of two Waterfront Auckland trams, marking the return of a part of Auckland’s history.
Wayne Mills, General Manager Marine and Multi-Cargo, says, “It is great to see the trams coming back to Auckland’s waterfront and Ports of Auckland is pleased to be a part of making it happen.”
The trams arrive on Hoegh Beijing from Australia and will be unloaded at Ports of Auckland on Jellicoe Wharf. The trams will be removed from the vessel using mafi trailers, a roller trailer that is designed for transporting loose cargo. The trams are chained down to the trailers and driven off with tractor units. Once off the vessel the trams will be craned off the mafi tailers on to the ground, in readiness for the move to their end destination of Wynyard Quay.
Auckland Central had electric trams running down Queen Street from 1902 until 1956 when they were removed.
The trams will be installed in the Wynyard Quarter.
Other unusual cargo shipped through Ports of Auckland includes horses, locomotives, wind farm turbines, helicopters and yachts. In 2008, Ports of Auckland loaded two young giraffes born at Auckland Zoo on a ship bound for New South Wales, Australia.
