Christchurch’s emerging leaders will be outlining their plans to help rebuild Christchurch in a live stream at 2pm NZT during the UNESCO Youth Voices Challenge tomorrow. Some of the earthquake-stricken city’s senior leaders, including MPs and local body representatives, will participate in a round table discussion with the youth leaders.

“The response of the Student Volunteer Army in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes has gone a long way towards re-branding negative stereotypes of students in the South,” says Louis Brown, co convener of this weekend’s UNESCO Youth Voices Challenge and co-leader of the Student Volunteer Army.

“This weekend is about what our generation is capable of beyond immediate disaster response: this large community of young people on the front-foot helping with the rebuild of our beautiful city.”

Mr Brown invited young people if they haven’t already, to have their say before 12pm NZT Saturday 28th May via Facebook, Twitter and Email.

“Tomorrow we also encourage anyone locally and around the world to tune in at 2pm NZT to watch the live stream of the Capability Presentation from Christchurch’s young leaders.”

Mr Brown says Christchurch residents now have a very different view about young people.

“Before the Student Volunteer Army if a busload of young people arrived on suburban streets many residents would have been frightened. But now when we arrive there is relief."

The UNESCO Youth Voices Challenge is the final event in the Youth Week 2011 calendar.
