PSA Launches Banner Competition to Celebrate 100th Birthday
The PSA turns one hundred in 2013 and to celebrate a century of richly woven trade union history it’s launched a nationwide competition to make a textile banner to reflect the union’s history and future.
The public sector union’s National Secretary Brenda Pilott says the competition reflects the important role banners have played in trade union history.
“Traditionally, banners are a source and reflection of a union’s mana and create a tremendous sense of pride and identity for members. They’re also a strong rallying point at celebrations, strikes and demonstrations so it’s fitting that the creation of a new banner forms part of the PSA centenary celebrations,” says Brenda Pilott.
“We’re inviting textile makers, designers and artists to come up with a design from which a cash prize and a commission will be awarded. The winner or winners will then have a year to turn their design into a new PSA banner,” says Brenda Pilott.
As well as the winning banner being used and displayed by the PSA it will also form part of a national touring exhibition that will start at the Wellington Museum of City and Sea in June 2013.
Dawn Sanders, founder & Chief Executive of Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ is managing the design competition that runs from now until December 1. Shortly afterwards, a panel of distinguished arts world people along with PSA National Secretary Brenda Pilott will pick the winner.
“As the largest trade union in New Zealand, the PSA is proud to support arts workers with this significant opportunity to be part of the union’s history and future,” says Brenda Pilott.
