Crewe Murders: Shock new revelations
The question of the mystery woman who fed baby Rochelle after her parents, Jeanette and Harvey Crewe, were murdered in their Pukekawa farmhouse has long fascinated followers of New Zealand’s most baffling “cold case”.
The sighting of a woman on the Crewes’ property in the five days between the cold-blooded killing and the police learning of the tragedy remains one of the great conundrums of the June 1970 crime.
Why did the police fail to interview a key potential witness? Why did they sideline the farm labourer who saw a woman in the Crewes’ garden?
In the new issue of North & South, on sale May 16, author and researcher Chris Birt reveals who police had in their sights. In this investigation into “the Phantom Women of Pukekawa’” Birt sifts through long-buried police files and asks why top detectives disregarded vital clues and failed to question a potentially crucial witness - for 35 years.
Owen Glenn – uncensored, unscripted and unleashed!
Donna Chisholm talks love, money and the secret to success with the controversial Kiwi multi-millionaire.
In his typical “boom boom” risqué style, Glenn revisits his turbulent relationship with “good bloke” Winston Peters but still insists he “wouldn’t lend him 10 bucks”.
From frontman of New Zealand business to aspiring knight, would-be consul and “gentle lover”, Glenn’s straightforward candour is an entertaining mix of ego, vanity, intellect and self-belief.
Should charity end at home?
Also in the June edition of North & South: our public hospital policy of “treat first, ask questions later” piles up millions of dollars of bad debt in treatment for foreign patients and overstayers – money that could be spent reducing elective surgery waiting lists for New Zealand taxpayers.
Stacey Anyan asks if we have a “soft touch” health-care system and tallies the cost of maintaining such an ethical stance.
It’s all in the June edition of North & South on news-stands from Monday, May 16.
