New World Ilam Supermarket on Target

New World Ilam Supermarket on Target

Despite two earthquakes, construction of the $19 million New World Ilam supermarket is on schedule and expected to be open towards the end of the year.

Roger Davidson, General Manager Property and Retail Development for Foodstuffs South Island, said that there had been some minor delays after the February 22 earthquake because tradespeople were required in other areas but lost time had been made up.

“The good news was that there was no damage to the site in the earthquake which meant that work could carry on. We are now at the stage where the flooring is complete and we are starting to erect the tilt-slab walls.

“One reason we have been able to pick up time is that we were able to continue making the walls on site through both earthquakes,” he said.

Situated on the former Feltex factory site and designed to integrate with the proposed Vision Senior Living retirement village, New World Ilam supermarket will have a floor area of 3992 sq metres.

“The new supermarket will be tailored for the area in which it is being built. There will be a very strong emphasis on fresh foods and an expanded product range, we will be unveiling a new European-styled bakery complete with a specially imported oven and customers will also be able to order espresso coffee as they enter the store.

“A big part of shopping today is all about the experience and shoppers will be well catered for when the supermarket opens,” he said.
