Further Stores Open at Westfield Albany
9am [0900] Friday 6 May: Auckland, New Zealand: The tornado that struck the Albany region on Tuesday 3 May 2011 impacted the western end of the Westfield Albany shopping Centre.
The Centre was closed only for the morning of Wednesday 4 May to enable all final life safety checks and engineering inspections to be carried out.
12 noon Wednesday 4 May: The eastern end of the centre, which contains some 82 retail stores – including New World, Kmart and the Foodcourt opened for trade. Carpark areas also opened for customer use.
Thursday 5 May: Event Cinemas re-opened.
Friday 6 May: Further stores at the ‘western end’ of the mall have re-opened bringing to the total number of stores to 110 open at the centre [75%].
Sunday 8 May: We anticipate re-opening level one [lower level] stores with the exception of Farmers. This will bring the total number of stores to some 90 % of the centre having re-opened.
Farmers and a small number of stores on the upper level remain closed.
Westfield has worked closely with its retailers to re-open Westfield Albany to the public. The centre is a place of employment and livelihood for many. Therefore, it was important the centre re-opened in a safe and efficient manner.
