Applications Extended for the Speight’s Environment Fund

Applications for the 2011 Speight’s Brewery Environment Fund have now been extended until Monday 2 May 2011. With many Dunedin not-for-profit groups recently helping out their Cantabrian neighbours, Speight’s have allowed a longer timeframe to accommodate more entries.

“We’re looking for not-for-profit groups with projects that will directly contribute to the conservation of our beautiful region,” says Chris Snow, Speight’s Brewery Tour Manager. “We’re hoping that by extending the application period lots of worthy environmental groups will come out of the woodwork. We are excited about giving this money away to help some great local causes.”

The Speight's Brewery Environment Fund was established in 2009 to support not-for-profit groups working to preserve and protect Dunedin's natural environment. Last year, Fish & Game NZ for the Owhiro Stream Enhancement, the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust and Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary were the recipients of nearly $13,000 worth of funding support.

2010 TALES

The Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary is using its grant for its Eelery Project, which looks to enhance the population of longfin and shortfin eels – real life taniwha with an astounding lifecycle that can span more than 100 years.

The well-known Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust is using their money for plantings to restore the Tavora Reserve for the support and protection of the rare yellow-eyed penguin.

This year’s available funds are currently sitting at over $55,000. This is made up of a $25,000 annual donation from Speight’s, plus $20,687 leftover from last year’s Fund. The remaining $9,628 comes from donations received for water taken from the Speight’s Brewery spring-water tap.

Applications can be made through the Speight’s Fund website directly or you can download an application form and email it to administration@speightsfund.co.nz. Applications now close 2 May 2011.

It’s your chance to do something important for the future of Dunedin’s stunning landscape, with the backing and funding of Speight’s, proudly Dunedin-based since 1876.
